Fixing screen, camera, and mic permissions

Weave needs three different things, and Chrome handles each differently. Most "Permission denied" errors map to one of the three sections below — find the one that matches the message you got, fix it, then click Start recording again.

1. Screen recording

The most common one — no persistent icon, no Chrome site setting

Screen capture (getDisplayMedia) is different from camera/mic — Chrome asks you every single time. There's no "always allow" and no camera icon for it. The dialog that opens is Chrome's picker:

If you clicked Cancel, hit Esc, or closed it any other way, that's the "Permission denied." Just hit Start recording again, pick a screen / window / tab, and click Share.

If the picker doesn't even open on macOS

macOS requires Chrome to have system-level Screen Recording permission. Granting it once unlocks the picker forever.

  1. Click the button above (or open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording).
  2. Find Google Chrome in the list, toggle it on.
  3. macOS will prompt to Quit & ReopenChrome — do that. (Otherwise the new permission isn't picked up.)
  4. Come back here and try again.

2. Camera

Persistent — find the small icon at the right end of the address bar

Chrome remembers your answer to the camera prompt. If you denied it once, there's no follow-up prompt — just an error.

The fix (Chrome 120+, the current build)

  1. Look at the address bar while on weave.voxility.ai. The icons live at the right end, between the URL and the extensions button. Look for a small camera or microphone icon — usually crossed out if blocked. If you've never been prompted, the icon doesn't show. Skip to the "Site settings" method below.
  2. Click the camera icon → a small popover opens. Choose Always allow weave.voxility.ai.
  3. Reload the page(this is required — Chrome doesn't live-update the permission state of an open page).
  4. Click Start recording.

Alternate fix: Site settings

  1. Click the tune icon at the left of the address bar (looks like two sliders, next to the lock icon).
  2. Site settings. A new tab opens.
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
  4. Close that tab, reload weave.voxility.ai, retry.

3. Microphone

Same as the camera section above — same icon, same fix

Microphone permission works identically to camera. Look for a mic icon at the right end of the address bar (or use Site settings), set to Always allow, reload.

On macOS, you also need to grant Chrome Microphone permission once at the OS level.

4. "Camera or mic in use by another app"

NotReadableError — the device is busy elsewhere

Only one app can hold the camera or mic at a time on macOS. The usual suspects:

  • Zoom / Google Meet / Teams open in another tab or window
  • FaceTime
  • OBS or other recording software still running in the menubar

Close them and try again. If you can't find the culprit, quit Chrome entirely and reopen.

5. Bonus: skip permissions with the Chrome extension

The extension prompts you once per session, not per recording

The Weave Chrome extension uses the same APIs but has its own permissions store. Once you grant it screen + camera + mic, you're done — recording from the toolbar icon or the global hotkey doesn't prompt again.
